Why is me-time important to me?

There are so many tasks that require our attention on a day-to-day basis in multiple aspects of our life that we forget our own needs and personality. Socializing and interacting with all the people in our lives at work, home or anywhere in the world is important. But the constant pressure to keep tending to others have left us with no time for self care. We are taught to please others and have grown up doing the same. We are made to feel guilty for spending time all by ourselves and called a narcissist. The world treats me-time as a crime because it only likes people who are constantly inclined towards prioritizing others.

Importance of me-time

Our life revolves around multiple people and tasks, that we lose track of who we are or what makes us happy. Personally, I can evaluate my needs and feelings only when I am alone. It helps me cut off the world and spend time with myself and have a conversation with myself. It’s just as same as having a conversation with my family and friends. Immersing ourselves in activities that represent our best selves is mandatory for self-discovery.

Performing tasks that make us happy and fill us with satisfaction, improves our mental as well as overall wellbeing. It also allows us to soak in every positivity atom surrounding you and forget about the noise of the outside world. According to me, it also reduces the fear and sadness revolving around losing our near ones. It makes us realize people leave and those who do not respect our time and efforts are not worth it. We enjoy our me-time. It makes you find love and comfort in our own company. People disappoint but our own self will never.

How I spend quality time with myself?

Personally, something as small as watching a YouTube video or listening to songs makes me happy and keeps my mind fresh. Viewing something that we love or listening to some instrumental or melodious songs reduce depression, improves sleep pattern and enhances our overall wellbeing. I usually watch ASMR journaling or cooking videos and listen to instrumental flute music.

Writing helps me in managing my anxiety and boosts my mood. It aligns my thought processes and provides a clear of picture of what exactly is going on in my mind. Sometimes my thoughts might be all over the place and all I do is write and try to recognize the pattern of my mood. I write on this blog, on my Instagram and sometimes just scribble my thoughts on a notebook.

I enjoy playing with my pets and that gives me a kind of satisfaction and joy (I have my cat sleep on my lap while writing this. Perfect timing :)). Animals bring out our inner child and help us as stress busters. Their innocence and cheerfulness are contagious and we get affected by them, too.

Conclusion

Me-time must be a part of our routine and is crucial for our overall wellbeing. It allows us to re-energize ourselves and prepares us to face and interact with the world again. You can spend quality time with yourselves in whatever way you want. If you love painting, go ahead with that or you just like sitting in your garden feeling the breeze. Do that. Always remember, SELF CARE IS NOT SELFISH.
