Social media has taken over the world in ways we cannot imagine. Every day, billions of people use it for different purposes. Some use it for entertainment to pass time while others use it for education and business. We have several social media platforms that have emerged in the last few decades. Now our lives revolve around them. Social media has helped millions of people. It has played its part very well in skyrocketing businesses, promoting the brands and their products. Also, we now don’t have to think twice about how to pass time.
I used to spend hours together scrolling through Instagram and posting stories. I enjoyed the process until I realized how it is affecting my mental health and how it is fueling my anxiety. We know that along with positive, there are thousands of negative contents which can trigger our mind. I didn’t realize how it was draining my mental energy until one day I broke down completely after watching a video. I realized it was time to take some time off from social media for the benefit of my mental health. Therefore, I took a social media break for a couple of weeks and those two weeks changed my life. Also, now that I am back on Instagram, I realized I don’t log in every other minute like I used to. That’s the impact social media vacation holds on me.
What are the signs that you need a social media break? Read here.
How social media break changed my life?
1. Increased productivity
Okay, let me be honest. I used to be a professional procrastinator who would just lie around with the phone in my hand scrolling through Instagram. I couldn’t focus on anything and would always think about the posts that are trending. Also, I couldn’t resist from logging in every other minute. But, after I went on a social media vacation, I realized I was working more than ever. My mind could focus again after a long time. I could work on multiple things a day. By the end of the day, I could feel the fountain of happiness and satisfaction within me.
2.Reduced anxiety and improved my mental health
As I mentioned earlier, social media fueled my anxiety and affected my mental health. But when I shut myself off social media, my mind felt relaxed. I felt free. And since my productivity increased as well, I was happier than ever before. I also started meditating, which keeps me fresh throughout the day. I have started viewing situations through a positive mindset. My patience level has increased. I believe in myself more than ever. That’s the magic social media vacation holds.
3. Introduction of new activities
Yes, you read it right. I started indulging myself in various hobbies. I started learning origami, read books after a long time, took up online courses and did everything that would relax my mind as well as add some values to my life. This took me back to my childhood when I used to sit with my friends, doing crafts and laughing together (I miss my school days a lot). Also, journaling helps you in calming anxiety and provides a clear picture of your life events.
Every person is unique. Not every one has anxiety issues because of social media. Not every person experiences the same effects after a social media break. But what I know is that social media detox is extremely important for our wellness. It makes us aware of what we are capable of and also it frees our mind. We can finally have some time to focus on ourselves and indulge in extra activities. I have decided to take breaks from social media very often. We can’t deny that there’s life outside social media. And that life is beautiful.
True👍. Well written👏❤
Thank you so much. It means a lot.
Well said 💯, social media is a platform which are used for different fields.
There are positive as well as negative contents. Which affects our mental stage at some point .
Social media break would help us get rid of negative thoughts which makes us weak mentally ✨.
Yes you are right. Some contents can be extremely triggering.
How difficult was it to take a break from Instagram? Didn’t it tempt you to come back?
To be honest I was exhausted of watching negative content. I thought it was going to be difficult. But in reality, I really enjoyed the process. It was kind of mental detox and also it increased my productivity.
The best thing about this article acc to me is its personal touch which makes it so very relatable. We all know we’ve been there and you’ve given it a voice in the most convincing way possible! I can’t tell you how much I agree with your point on social media being flooded with negative content, from reels promoting a particular body image to absolutely irrational self centred political quarrels.
Your article has brought forth all these points beautifully and highlighted the importance of taking time for oneself and prioritising on our productivity.
Good job Amisha!! Looking forward to more of these amazing write ups from you!
