Art of giving: What does it actually mean?

Service. It is the most used word in our everyday conversations. It’s used in the business world to refer to the assistance or support provided to customers. But, if you look at the deeper meaning, it means a support or selfless act performed to help someone in need or to make someone feel good. There are no expectations or greed attached to it. This is what I call the real art of giving.

Why do we help others?

The art of giving is the best trait anybody can possess. And not everyone has that. It requires a lot of selflessness and a kind heart. When we help someone, we can have several intentions. Maybe you are expecting them to return the favor in the future. You might wish for some kind of emotional relationship and support. It can even be that whatever help or support you are providing is for monetary gains. Amongst all these reasons comes the one with no intentions. The purest of all. Here, we do not expect any kind of emotional or monetary returns, nor it is conditional. There is a saying that goes, “We haven’t lived fully until we have helped someone who can’t return the favor.”

The real art of giving

Even when we are helping someone who is in a bad shape, we still expect that something good will happen to us in return to this good deed that we are doing. We feed a hungry dog, for instance, we wonder “What good might karma do to me in return to this good deed that I am doing?” As long as we are serving others only for good karma, it will never give us peace and satisfaction. The ultimate karma comes to those who help others making no noise. Unconditional service is the ultimate virtue. The one who keeps their mind clear of expectations is the wisest.

Nobody is perfect (including me) and it’s okay. Also, we can’t be too generous every time and not everybody has good intentions. It’s okay to not lend a helping hand to scammers, and we shouldn’t. But, when someone genuinely needs help and we are blessed with the ability to do that, then we should definitely do that. No expectations 🙂
